Vince’s Gift: A Lib Dem Poll Lift

Posted by The Futility Monster on April 1, 2010 @ 09:54

Last night’s polling was pretty dramatic, it has to be said. ICM released a poll, conducted on Tuesday, showing the Lib Dems at 29%. The YouGov tracker also showed the same response, the Lib Dems shifting up nine points to 28%.

As an avid follower of polls, I would normally exercise caution; but just this once restraint is going out of the window. After all, two polls showing huge swings way beyond the margin of error is pretty conclusive.

A breakthrough of such magnitude can only be down to one man: Vince Cable.

All Hail The Cable!

Despite just 2m people watching the “Ask The Chancellors” programme, it’s clear that the man’s legend spreads way beyond just those who watch TV. It was the watercooler moment of the month, and doubtless the entire election campaign when Vince said, from his centre podium, flanked either side by George Osborne and Alistair Darling…

It’s often known that us Liberal Democrats are quite fond of sitting on the fence, taking the centre ground, splitting the difference. But in this case, I feel like the rose between two thorns. Or, in the immortal words of Stealers Wheel: clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am: stuck in the middle with change that works for you.

Naturally, the way in which he glanced at Osborne and Darling at the appropriate moment was his usual case of perfect comic timing. Unsurprisingly, it has become quite the viral moment on YouTube.

This small step will set the tone for the way the Lib Dems are going to take on the other two parties in the coming campaign. Bold, aggressive, unashamed of their policies.

And clearly, the electorate love it. In this age of personality politics, it is only right that us Lib Dems enter the fray with gestures such as this.

Purists may frown, and opponents of negative campaigning may weep, but battle has been joined, and not before time.

And if it results in a Lib Dem majority government, so be it.

Here’s to you, Vince.

UPDATE – 2/4/10: Obviously this was an April Fool, but in the end it wasn’t too far short of the mark. How about a Lib Dem poll rating of 23%? That’d do nicely, wouldn’t it. Well, it actually happened later that day…
